Welbi Masterclass: Monitoring Resident Engagement

Welbi makes it easy for you to monitor resident engagement and leverage the data you have to interact and engage with your residents in a more personal and meaningful way.

This video is a recording of a live Welbi Masterclass that took place on August 3, 2023.

The toll that social isolation can have on a resident

Mental Health Impact: Can lead to feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Residents may feel disconnected and experience a decline in their emotional well-being.

Emotional Challenges: Social interactions provide emotional support and a sense of belonging. Without this, residents may struggle to cope with emotional challenges and may feel less supported in their daily lives.

Quality of Life: Can diminish the overall quality of life for residents. Feelings of boredom, helplessness, and disconnection from others can lead to a diminished sense of purpose and enjoyment in daily activities.

Cognitive Decline: Regular social interactions stimulate the brain and help maintain cognitive function. Socially isolated residents may experience a faster decline in memory, attention, and other cognitive abilities.

Physical Health Consequences: May lead to reduced physical activity and neglect of health habits. This can result in weaker muscles, decreased mobility, and decline in physical health

Identifying Residents Needing Engagement

Start off every day on the Overview Page:

    • You can also click ‘View All’ to see all of your residents and how much time has elapsed since their last engagement.
  • Use your judgment and knowledge of each resident to assess what kind of intervention is needed
    • Sitting alone in your room all day isn’t healthy for anyone! While some residents prefer not to join in on organized group programming, it’s still important to ensure residents are engaging socially and pursuing meaningful independent activities to maintain their quality of life.

Using Data to Drive Resident Engagement

Review the resident’s Summary page

  • Review ‘Resident Information’ section for a snapshot of their background and engagement information
  • Review assessment plans to get up to speed on any resident goals, likes and dislikes, and other special considerations

Review the resident’s most recent assessment

These can help you know the type of program to invite your resident out to and the time of day they may prefer

  • Click into the resident’s most recent assessment and review for information that will help you tailor your engagement strategy. For example:
    • Any special considerations to facilitate participation (e.g., vision, hearing, cognition)
    • Hobbies and interests
    • Time of day preferences
    • Program type preference (group, 1-on-1)

Review the resident’s profile

These can be good speaking points and help you get to know the resident a little better.

  • Click into the resident’s profile to get to know a little more about their background and life history. For example:
    • Occupations
    • Languages Spoken
    • Hometown/Places lived
    • Religious Affiliation

Resident Engagement Insights

These can give you an idea of the programs the resident enjoys coming out to.

  • Click into the resident’s insights for the current month
  • Take a look at the programs they’ve attended so far and their engagement level for these programs

If your company is using Program Templates in Welbi:

  • Review suggested programs and generate a personalized calendar for the resident
  • Bring the calendar to the resident and walk them through the programs you think they may like to come out to

Resident Attendance Goals

If your community has resident attendance goals (e.g. 100% of residents to attend 4 programs per month):

  • Go to your Insights page
  • On your ‘Summary’ or ‘Goals’ page scroll down until you see the ‘Resident Attendance’ insight
  • Click ‘View All’
  • Select your current month from the date picker and scroll down to see your list of residents who have not met their attendance goal yet
    • You will be able to see how many programs they have attended so far, which will let you know how many more programs they need to attend this month.
    • Export and print this list for volunteers/students to invite residents out to programs or schedule 1-on-1s

Capturing 1-on-1 Visits & Self-Directed Engagement

Logging 1-on-1 Visits

  • Log instances where you have a spontaneous 1-on-1 with a resident
  • Schedule a 1-on-1 based on what you’ve learned about the resident
  • Schedule a recurring 1-on-1
    • E.g., if this resident really doesn’t like group programs, might be a good idea to schedule a recurring 1-on-1 with them to ensure they’re getting consistent social interaction

Logging Self-Directed Activities

Some residents may not be keen on group programs or 1-on-1 visits, but have very active social lives outside of the community. Visits or outings with friends/family can be captured as a self-directed activity.

Gatherings amongst residents in the community can be logged as self-directed activities or as group programs with a resident facilitator.

If you notice your residents gathering on a recurring basis (e.g., weekly), you can schedule a recurring program in your planning calendar.

Did you know?

Self-directed activities entered in Welbi will contribute towards your ‘Residents Needing Engagement’ list to help you keep track of who truly may be at risk of isolation, plus gives you a fuller picture of the residents day-to-day and engagement patterns (e.g., so you can speak confidently in family meetings, notice changes that may be of concern, etc).

Documenting attendance for self-directed activities helps keep your ‘residents needing engagement’ list as accurate as possible. (e.g. Donna may not have come out to group programs this week but she had a friend visit, and had coffee with another resident twice).
