Understanding the Importance of Capturing a Resident's Hobbies & Interests

Learn how documenting a resident's hobbies and interests in Welbi can be a game changer when it comes to tailoring your program offerings, personalizing the resident experience, and fostering connections within your community.

Capturing a resident's past and present hobbies and interests, or identifying new interests they may wish to pursue while living in your community, can help you and your team deliver more person-centered experiences.

Under a resident's Profile or Assessments tab, you will have a question where you can document a resident's hobbies and interests. It will look something like the image below (wording may vary based on your organization's settings).

When you capture a resident's interests here, Welbi will use this information to give you personalized program recommendations based on the resident's hobbies and interests.  This information is also aggregated into insights that help you understand what your resident population is interested in as a whole, which can help you offer more tailored programming and introduce residents to one another based on shared interests. Read on to learn more!

Welbi's Recommendation Engine

When you are creating a program on your planning calendar, there is a hobbies field where you can list some hobbies or interests that are related to the program you're planning.

When deciding which hobbies to list here, it can be helpful to ask yourself the question: "What hobbies or interests might a resident have that would lead them to wanting to try out this program?" For example, for a Chair Yoga program, you might list hobbies such as "Yoga" and "Exercise".

Once hobbies are entered on the program, you can click the Load Residents button in the "Residents Likely to Attend" panel to get recommendations for which residents are most likely to be interested in attending, based on the hobbies and interests listed in their profile or assessment.

Note: These recommendations also take past program attendance into account. For example, if you have a resident that attends Chair Yoga every single week, but doesn't have "Exercise" or "Yoga" listed in their profile or assessment, Welbi will still recognize them as likely to attend based on the fact that they attend consistently.

You can also make use of these recommendations when taking attendance to see all of the residents most likely to attend right at the top of the page (check out this article for more information).

Resident Filter

The Resident Filter tool,  found in the Residents section of the platform, is another place where you can make use of the resident hobbies and interests you've entered into Welbi.

By leveraging the Resident Filter, you can quickly generate lists of residents with shared hobbies and interests. This tool can help you find residents to introduce to each other (e.g., perhaps you have a new resident who loves playing Bridge, and you'd like to identify others with this interest to set up a meet and greet), identify residents who might be interested in an upcoming  event, program, or outing (e.g., perhaps you'd like to quickly pull a list of all residents interested in art for an upcoming Art Museum trip), and more. Check out this article for more information on how to filter your resident list!

Resident Profile and Assessment Insights

If your organization is capturing resident hobbies and interests in the resident profiles, you should have an insight under the "Resident Profiles" tab of the Insights section.  If your organization is capturing this information in assessments, you'll find this insight under the "Assessments" tab of the Insights section.

The name of this insight will match the wording of the hobbies and interests question in your resident profiles or assessments. The bar graph will give you a sense of the top five resident hobbies within your community, and clicking the View All  button at the bottom of the graph will show you a list of every single resident hobby along with exactly which residents are interested in each.

"Resident Hobbies vs. Programs Offered" Insight

The "Resident Hobbies vs. Programs Offered" insight is found under the "Programs" tab of the Insights section.  This insight helps you understand whether the programs you're offering are aligned with the hobbies and interests that have been entered in your resident profiles or assessments, and identify areas for improvement.

In the "Category" column, you'll see the name of a hobby or interest. The "Time Offered" column tells who how many times you've offered a program related to this hobby during the chosen timeframe, and the "Residents Interested" column tells you how many residents have this hobby listed in their profile or assessment.

For instance, in the example below, we can see that although we have 7 residents interested in gardening, we aren't offering any programs related to gardening at this time.

The table above will show data for the top 5 resident hobbies within your community, but you can click View All to see this data for every single hobby that has been entered into a resident's profile or assessment.
